Cheltenham: A heartbroken mum is on a mission. Ellen Roome is fighting against Snapchat and Meta. She believes her son Jools, just 14, took his life due to an online challenge.

Jools was found dead in his room. A coroner couldn’t confirm if he was feeling suicidal. Ellen thinks his online activity holds the key to understanding his tragic death.

She recalls Jools loved doing online challenges. But now, she worries he might have fallen for a dangerous one, like the Blackout challenge. This challenge has been linked to many young deaths.

Ellen is pushing for “Jools’ Law.” This law would let parents access their deceased children’s social media accounts. She believes this could help uncover the truth about Jools’ last moments.

Her petition has gained over 126,000 signatures. It was even debated in Parliament recently. Ellen feels that having access to Jools’ accounts could provide crucial answers.

Her world shattered in April 2022 when she found Jools unconscious. Without access to his social media, she feels lost. She just wants to know what happened that day.

Ellen describes Jools as a happy kid. He was always smiling and had many friends. Over 500 people attended his funeral. No one saw this coming.

She spoke to him just an hour and a half before his death. Since then, she’s been on a quest for answers. She fears he might have tried some viral challenges that are dangerous.

Ellen has spent thousands on legal fees trying to get Jools’ data. She’s met with TikTok and emailed Meta and Snapchat. But without a court order, they can’t help her.

She’s frustrated with how these companies have responded. TikTok won’t give her access without a court order. Meta shared some info, but not the messages she needs.

Snapchat has allowed her to see some messages, but deleted ones are gone forever. Ellen just wants to prevent other parents from going through this pain.

“It won’t bring my son back,” she says. “I just want answers.” Her petition has gained traction, and she’s hopeful for change.

Ellen found the recent Parliament debate emotional. She sat with other grieving parents, all seeking answers. Every MP supported her petition, which felt amazing.

She’s also set up a fundraising page to help with legal costs. Ellen is determined to fight for transparency and safety online. She doesn’t want any other family to suffer like hers.

Meta has been contacted for a comment. To support Ellen, you can visit her fundraising page.
