Grimsby: A councillor is really pushing for better sports facilities at Barrett’s Rec. Cllr Robson Augusta wants to turn it into a community hub. He brought it up at the last council meeting.

Barrett’s Rec could be a great sports hub, according to the North East Lincolnshire Council’s plan. While Clee Fields got a makeover, Barrett’s Rec hasn’t seen much change. Just some tennis courts got renovated, thanks to the Lawn Tennis Association.

Cllr Augusta dreams of adding 3G pitches for football and hockey. He believes the community wants this. “It’s a big space not being used,” he said. He’s been chatting with residents, especially those on Landsdowne Avenue.

This area is protected green space. Cllr Augusta thinks it’s perfect for a sports hub. He mentioned it could serve three nearby wards, making it easily accessible. Plus, it could help reduce anti-social behavior and littering.

He pointed out that sports can keep young people engaged. Cllr Augusta noted that Sports England is interested in investing here. The local council has also declared itself a ‘public health council.’

Currently, Discoveries Football Club uses Barrett’s Rec for training. But the facilities are looking a bit shabby. There’s only one set of goalposts and an astro turf cricket pitch.

At the council meeting, Cllr Augusta asked for updates on the sports plan. Cllr Hayden Dawkins acknowledged the potential but mentioned costs and future viability. They’ll review the plan in 2025, which feels like a long wait.

Cllr Augusta isn’t worried about a new pitch at Oasis Wintringham Academy affecting his plans. He believes Barrett’s Rec can still be a great spot for community sports.

Right now, it’s mostly a dog walking area. “We can do so much more here,” he said. He suggested starting with grass pitches and transforming old pavilions into changing rooms.

Cllr Augusta is committed to this cause. He encourages residents to reach out to him. He’s hopeful there will be a consultation about the review soon.
