Dougie Lewis, a great-great grandad from Grimsby, turns 100 and shares his secrets to a long life: a little drink and staying active at The Trin Centre.
Dougie, known as a “legend,” celebrated with friends from his Gentle Exercise class. He joined the class at The Trin Centre in Cleethorpes when he was 98.
His great-grandson Joe, a Youth Worker at The Trin, helped organize the celebration at Lindsey Hall Care Home.
At 17, Dougie volunteered for the Royal Marines and served during the D-Day landings. After the war, he married Joan, and they had two sons, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Dougie shared that he dreaded turning 100 but felt he had lived a good life. He enjoyed a drink now and then, especially whisky that Joan would bring home.
When Joan became ill, Dougie stopped drinking to care for her. He felt heartbroken when she passed but found comfort knowing she was no longer in pain.
Dougie praised his son Robert for always supporting him. He enjoys many activities at the care home, keeping himself busy.
He misses The Trin, where he had fun every Friday. The Gentle Exercise class became a highlight of his week, and he made many friends there.
Joe encouraged Dougie to join the class, and he showed up in his Sunday best. Dougie loved it and formed lasting friendships.
Kerry Hillman, Community Manager at The Trin, called Dougie a role model. He inspires others by showing that age is just a number and that anything is possible.
