AI traffic cameras are back in Humber to catch unsafe drivers after successful trials revealed alarming stats
Humber: AI-powered traffic cameras are making a comeback. They’ll catch drivers using their phones or not wearing seatbelts. These cameras were tested over the last two years.
During the trials, they spotted 849 driving offences in just two weeks. That’s a lot! The data came from a request to Cinch Freedom of Information.
The cameras were active in Humber from March 27 to 31, 2023, and again from June 10 to 17, 2024. They work by filming cars and using AI to spot bad driving habits.
If the AI flags something, a person checks the footage. The offences recorded included 533 seatbelt violations and 301 drivers using their phones. There were also a few other minor issues.
This trial was part of a bigger national effort involving police forces like Greater Manchester and Thames Valley. Ian Robertson from Safer Roads Humber said they want to make roads safer.
He noted it’s disappointing that so many people still take risks. The goal is to change driver behavior and reduce accidents. They’ll use tech alongside traditional methods to educate and enforce rules.
After the trials, the cameras will be used sporadically throughout the year. They’ll also inform the public to help change driving habits.
Sam Sheehan from Cinch praised the findings. He believes AI can really help make roads safer. The success of these trials might lead to more cameras popping up across the UK.
