Eighteen new CCTV cameras are now active in Grimsby town centre, boosting safety. Managed by Equans, these cameras aim to reduce crime and support emergency services.
The cameras are managed by Equans, a partner of North East Lincolnshire Council. They are placed around the new Riverhead Square, which opened last July.
This project started in 2022, costing £2.25 million to help reduce crime and anti-social behavior. The council reports an 11% drop in crime over the past year.
From September to December last year, the cameras assisted emergency services with 555 incidents, including theft and arson.
A council spokesperson mentioned that these new cameras will further enhance public safety in the area.
The Riverhead Square is part of a regeneration effort funded by the Town Deal from the government.
The square features 7,000 plants, trees, and shrubs, creating a natural environment. It has already hosted events like the Grimsby and Clee Eats Street Food Festival.
Councillor Ron Shepherd highlighted that these cameras are a valuable addition to the existing safety measures. He believes they will help reduce anti-social behavior and crime even more.
