St John’s Playgroup in Cinderford has received a ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted, highlighting its supportive environment and positive impact on children’s emotional well-being.
Inspectors loved the positive atmosphere created by the friendly staff. Kids start their day with a fun wake-up song, dancing and stretching while singing about their feelings. This helps boost their emotional well-being.
The playgroup serves children aged two to four and currently has 42 kids enrolled. It can accommodate up to 29 children at once. The playgroup has made great progress since its last inspection in March 2024.
The curriculum is designed to build on what kids already know. This helps them learn and prepare for the next steps in their education. Leaders have made changes to the learning environment, including a new classroom and better staff training.
Staff have received training on communication and storytelling. However, the report suggests they could improve by asking more open-ended questions to help kids express themselves better.
Independence is encouraged at the playgroup. Children take responsibility for tasks like hanging up their coats. They confidently ask for help when needed and are polite in doing so.
The playgroup promotes kindness and empathy among children. They engage in cooperative activities, like building towers with cardboard boxes, while staff model positive interactions.
Outdoor play is a highlight, with kids enjoying games like hide and seek. They explore the garden and practice physical skills, like climbing and riding bikes. Staff remind them to manage risks safely.
Support for children with special educational needs is effective, with personalized plans in place. Parents have shared positive feedback about the care their children receive.
The report suggests further improvements in staff questioning skills and supporting independent thinking. St John’s Playgroup operates during school terms, Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The setting is managed by a committee and employs nine staff members, seven of whom have Level 3 qualifications.
