PETA’s new billboard in Gloucester encourages dairy farmers to switch to vegan farming, sparking debate over the future of dairy in the UK.
Gloucester: A new billboard by PETA is stirring up conversation about dairy farming. It says, “Dairy farmers: It’s time to moove on. The future of farming is vegan.” This comes after Gloucestershire County Council changed its advice on plant-based milk alternatives due to backlash from dairy farmers.
PETA wants farmers to stop dairy production and switch to plant-based farming. Dawn Carr, PETA’s Vice President, stated that the dairy industry is cruel and harmful to the planet.
The billboard encourages farmers to leave behind outdated practices and grow crops for vegan milk instead. PETA argues that dairy farming is unethical and bad for the environment.
They highlight that cows are artificially inseminated, and their calves are taken away shortly after birth. Many male calves are culled or raised for veal, while female calves often face the same fate as their mothers.
PETA also points out changing consumer habits. They say 48% of British adults now prefer plant-based milk, and cow’s milk consumption has dropped significantly over the last 50 years. They urge the government to help farmers transition to plant-based agriculture.
However, agricultural groups are pushing back. Mo Metcalf-Fisher from the Countryside Alliance claims most people still enjoy dairy and meat. He believes the council’s previous advice was misguided and hurt local farmers.
Gloucestershire County Council clarified that they support personal choice and do not dictate what residents should eat. PETA remains confident that the dairy industry is declining and continues to advocate for plant-based farming.
