Exciting plans for a greener Scunthorpe High Street are moving forward with a £500k investment aimed at enhancing the area.
Scunthorpe: The council is making strides to green up the High Street. They got £500,000 from the Levelling Up Fund last May. This money is all about making the area more inviting.
Last month, they hired AHR Building Consultancy to survey the land. This will help them figure out the best way to create a green corridor. The idea is to replace some of the hard surfaces with greenery, like trees and plants.
Cllr Rob Waltham, the council leader, is excited about the changes. He believes this will make the High Street more vibrant and welcoming for everyone. New seating and planters will also be added in Jubilee Way, the main shopping area.
The project is set to kick off in Spring 2025. Some local Labour councillors are happy about the plans but want more investment in the whole area, not just the council HQ end.
Cllr Mashook Ali praised the green corridor idea. He thinks it will improve the environment and attract more visitors. However, he also mentioned that more needs to be done to revitalize the High Street.
Cllr Lorraine Yeadon pointed out the big spending on other projects, like the Elizabeth Quarter. She believes some of that money could have been better spent on the High Street to benefit local people.
Many residents are hoping for a new community center or a leisure facility for teens. They want to see more investment in their area.
