Dudley Ramsden, founder of the Ramsden Group, has passed away at 81, leaving a lasting impact on the convenience store industry and independent retailers.
Grimsby: Dudley Ramsden, the founder of the Ramsden empire, has sadly passed away at 81. He was a key figure in the convenience store industry.
Ramsden started D.B. Ramsden & Co Ltd over 60 years ago. His work shaped the independent retail sector significantly. Dee Bee Wholesale, part of his group, shared the news of his passing.
His family and colleagues expressed deep sadness. They remembered him as a great friend, father, and grandfather. Dudley was a pioneer in the wholesale and convenience sectors.
He founded several companies, including Nisa Retail and Today’s wholesale buying group. His efforts helped independent retailers compete with larger chains.
In 1977, he co-founded the Nisa buying consortium. This collaboration allowed independent retailers to benefit from collective buying power.
Under his leadership, Nisa grew into a strong network of stores. He retired as chairman in 2006 but continued to advise the next generation.
Dudley’s influence reached beyond business. He was known for his vibrant personality at industry events. His legacy will inspire future entrepreneurs.
His sons, Nick and Sean, now lead the Ramsden Group. They carry on their father’s passion and commitment to the industry.
Many tributes have poured in. Former Nisa boss Neil Turton called him a true entrepreneur. Others praised his remarkable character and contributions.
In 2001, Dudley reduced his work hours to spend more time with family. He had recovered from heart surgery and returned to Grimsby Town FC’s board.
Ramsden’s Grimsby superstore underwent a £1m refurbishment to adapt to changing retail trends. He recognized the evolving marketplace and aimed to stay ahead.
Sadly, the store closed in April 2016, ending 70 years of retail history. Dudley believed this would lead to new opportunities for the site.
