Karen Lunn was caught drink driving in Leicester. She was nearly triple the legal limit after her cousin’s death.
Police got a tip about Lunn. She drove off after drinking at her place on Biddle Road. Officers searched the area after initially losing her. They spotted her Astra on Aikman Avenue.
They used lights to stop her car. Lunn seemed drunk at the wheel. Her breath test was very high. It showed 102 microgrammes, and a station test showed 95. The legal limit is only 35.
Lunn had past offenses, including one for not giving a sample after suspected drunk driving in 2009.
Her lawyer, Rachel Diorio, spoke for Lunn, who pleaded guilty to the charge. Diorio said Lunn does not have a drinking problem and drank due to sadness. Lunn has depression and anxiety.
Her cousin died in a canal, causing her a lot of distress. She used alcohol to cope with it. She lost her daughter years ago, and this new event made her drink. Court was her first time leaving home since her arrest.
Diorio asked for a fine only, saying a community order would be hard, as Lunn is on Universal Credit currently.
The court banned Lunn from driving for 20 months. They also fined her £200, plus £85 costs and £80.
